This model has been programmed to operate correctly on DC or DCC immediately out of the box, though for sound fitted models, there is a smaller range of sounds available when operating on analogue.

For DCC users, there are additional controls and features which, if used correctly, will enable you to get closer to the real thing.

Please read these notes which have been prepared to help you gain the optimal operational and auditory experience.

Engine Starting

Warm Start. 

Engage F1 and wait for the steady idle sound.

Cold Start.

Engage F5 first then F1. Engine will crank several times before starting. The engine will ‘hunt’ several times before settling down to normal Idle. (F5 can then be disengaged if required)

Failed Start.

Engage F key 13 and wait for the routine to complete. You can repeat this as often as required.

This will not operate if the engine is currently running and it will not be possible to trigger a normal or cold start or to move the loco during the failed start routine.

Heavy Train/Light Engine Mode Selection

The default setting is for ‘heavy train’. Inertia is high so acceleration (and deceleration) is restricted.

Activated by F5, Light Engine mode enables reduced inertia setting to allow more rapid acceleration and deceleration.

F5 can be operated at any speed to give another way in which the model’s response to control inputs may be modified instantly.

Dynamic Inertia

A combination of new features is included in the automatic operation of the throttle which will affect how the model responds to your control inputs.

The operation is identical in either ‘heavy’ or ‘light’ mode.

Put in simple terms, the wider you open the power controller, the quicker the gear change  sounds occur and the acceleration rate increases correspondingly.

What does this mean in practice?

If you use your controller’s throttle gently, with modest speed step increases, then the engine will rise and fall automatically and the model will accelerate according to the momentum setting. This is by default high for ‘heavy’ and low for ‘light’.

If however, you open the throttle rapidly, the gears will change up to highest gear and initial acceleration will be approximately 3 times quicker. This change in acceleration rate is variable and dependent upon throttle operation.

If that’s not enough variation for your needs, switch to ‘Light Engine’ mode with F5, which will temporarily reduce the values in CVs 3 and 4, giving driving characteristics of a loco without a train attached.

These features are designed to operate together seamlessly, making it possible to simulate realistic acceleration and deceleration rates for any size of train without the need to reprogramme CVs to do so.

Brakes

F2 will provide a working and progressive brake effect to slow the model’s road speed quickly. It can be ‘dabbed’ or held for varying length.

However, if the throttle is reduced beforehand, as a real driver would do before braking, a braking force will be applied which will continue to increase the longer F2 is held. Short dabs will provide speed trimming, held down continuously will result in a controlled ‘Emergency Stop’.

PowerCab users please note that the Horn/Whistle button operates the same sound/function as the F2 Key, but set as ‘momentary’. This facilities the precise operation of the brakes and should be used instead of F2.

Other systems may have F2 set to operate as ‘momentary’ by default, or can be set to do so.

Gear Changes

Gear changes will be triggered automatically at the appropriate speeds.

It is possible to ‘force’ a gear change by reducing the throttle by one speed step then immediately raising it again.

Coasting

Reducing the speed steps by around 4 (of 28) will reduce the engine revs to idle. The model will continue to coast, slowing down gradually. Use the Brake Key to slow the loco more quickly.

Automated Sounds

Some sounds are now semi or fully automated. They will add to the experience by generating sounds in response to the way the model is ‘driven’.

1. Locomotive Brake. The sound of the handbrake being applied plays automatically a few seconds after the loco comes to a halt. This is fully automatic and requires no operator intervention.

2. Flange Squeal. This is enabled with F9, but the sound will not play when speed is zero. This means it can be safely used in close quarters shunting without needing to be manually disengaged. 

Furthermore, there are both slow speed and higher speed flange sounds available. The sound project automatically selects the correct sample depending upon the actual speed of the model.

3. Wagons ‘hunting’. This feature is enabled when F6 is engaged but is automatically disengaged when ‘Light Engine’ mode is selected (F5).

It does not play sounds when the loco is stationary.

This feature can be used to simulate the sound of the couplings ‘snatching’ on harsh acceleration or wagon buffering sounds on deceleration (or rough braking) by varied use of the throttle control.

In the default ‘Heavy Train’ mode, i.e. with F5 not engaged, the action is as follows:

From Standing, open throttle no more than 3 speed steps (of 28) or 11 (of 127) at a time. The model will accelerate normally and no snatching sounds will be played.

From Standing, open the throttle by 3 speed steps or more and the stretching sounds will play. This will happen at any time the throttle is increased by this amount.

When moving, reduce speed by no more that 3 steps at a time. The model will decelerate normally with no snatching sounds.

When moving, reduce speed by 4 speed steps or more and snatching sounds will play. This will happen at any time the throttle is decreased by this amount.

With the model moving at slow speed, operate the Brake Key. If this key is active at the point at which the model stops moving, the buffering sound will play as the wagons close up on stopping.

Manually Operated Sounds

Other sounds generated by the operation of locomotives may be more intermittent in nature.

DCC users will have access to a range of such sounds by using the appropriate F keys on their controllers, see the Function List below.

The volume of these sounds can be adjusted in isolation by varying the value in the appropriate CV as shown. The allowable range is 1 -255 within which larger values give louder sound.

Transmission Whine

This sound is characteristic of these locos. The sound is automatically played whilst the model is moving and the pitch is directly related to the road speed.

Overall Volume Control

Useful for entering tunnels or fiddle yards, engaging F19 will gradually reduce overall volume to zero where it will remain until F19 is disengaged whereupon the sound will gradually increase to the previous volume setting. With a little practice, this feature can also be used to simulate the locomotive moving away from or towards your position.

Live Volume Control

Provided the sound is switched on and the ‘fade’ button is not active, it is possible to change the overall volume to suit changing needs.

Engage F27 and the sound levels will gradually reduce, eventually to silence

Engage F28 and the sound levels will gradually increase, eventually to maximum.

In each case, disengage the F key when the desired level is attained. Set F27 and F28 as ‘momentary’ if your DCC controller allows you to do so.

Note: If the volume controls appear to not function, check that F19, F27 and F28 are disengaged before making a further attempt.

Shunt Mode

Engage F12 to temporarily reduce speed by 50% and remove all inertia setting. This gives more accurate control during shunting moves. Disengage to revert back to normal. The sounds will automatically adjust whenever this mode is changed.

Also during Shunt Mode, if the lights are switched on (F key 0) then front and rear headlamps will illuminate simultaneously. This was common during shunting to alleviate the need to change the illuminated lamps with each change of direction.

Note. This is exclusive to Shunt Mode operations. In all other modes, the lamps will illuminate according to direction of travel.
